1000 OCEANS was the second video shot from the album To Venus And Back, directed by Erick Ifergan. The video debuted on MTV's 120 Minutes on October 24, 1999. During an interview with Tori on the MTV "Live and Unrehearsed" Video Webcast on August 16, 1999, she mentioned a European version of the video, which would show the lesbians kissing. However, a European version of the video was never released.
Tori is seemingly trapped like a zoo animal in a glass display window along the street of a major city. A variety of passersby stop to observe her inside and each somehow connects with her on an emotional level..somehow communicating through the glass.
"In the song there is this ferocious commitment to finding this person. I don't know who the song is singing about - it's different for different people when they hear it. She has this depth of love for a daughter or whoever it is. I think some of the other songs look to her sometimes for that kind of resilience. "Juarez" [based on a true story of unsolved murders of women on the Mexican border] is the other extreme, when you're so cut off and severed from any kind of humanity that you can mutilate another person. You've got to be pretty close to soul death, to lose your own soul, to do that to another person. And that's happening right now, it's been going on for the last ten years."

The 1000 Oceans video was released in collectible form on the 1000 Oceans US single, which is a special Hyper-CD, viewable only in conjunction with the Atlantic Records Website.
