GLORY OF THE 80'S was the third video shot from the album To Venus And Back, directed by Erick Ifergan. While in Los Angeles in late September 1999, Tori filmed the Glory Of The 80's video at Universal Studios. It is known to have been aired on MTV Europe.
This video features a very gothic-looking Tori, complete with black vinyl dress with elongated sleeves that extend much farther beyond her hands, and black lipstick. Tori is trapped in a metal square frame torture chamber, with heavy cable bars fastened from her clothing to the frame of the cage. A spinning chinese star flies randomly, yet consistently throughout the scene, eventually spinning into enough of the cables helping Tori to break free of the structure. Before that happens, Tori sprouts huge black feathered wings and morphs into different creatures while inside the cage: a wold and a crow or raven. Once free, a wingless Tori flies away.
T: ...The Glory of the 80s video is coming out and this director says to me - he's French, so I'm going to do his accent - he goes "I have zis idea!" And I'm like "Okay . . . " And he goes "No 80s reference, ugh!" And I said "Yeah, yeah, okay." And he goes "So you're hooked, yeah? (holds out her arms like she's being crucified) Like a modern Joan of Arc but . . . mmm . . . strange. Sexual, oui?" And he's going on and on and he goes "You vill morph into these different creatures . . ." And I'm like "O-kay"
MP: That's when you call for security!
T: So I'm in this torture chamber, which is supposed to be quite fashionable, I guess, in his mind, and yeah, there you have it . . . the French.
MP: Did you actually go along with it?
T: Oh, yes, it's done!
MP: How was it? Did he hang you from the torture chamber?
T: Ooooh, yes.
MP: Was it pleasurable at least? A good experience?
T: Fascinating, because there's something very . . . metallic about the whole thing. You're in wires and I'm in this glam dress . . .
MP: Well, the 80s were about wires and -
T: And black lipstick. Like -
MP: Very very new age.
T: Very Robert Smith in a way.
