../WHO WAS DELIGHT?

For Delirium was once Delight. All of Delirium's appearances, including at Orpheus' wedding have been as Delirium. Destiny's portrait for her in Seasons of Mists suggests that it was made while she was still Delight. Another image of Delight appears to Dream and Delirium while in Destiny's garden in Brief Lives. But the character of Delight has not appeared in any of the books.

In Brief Lives, there is a significant flashback to a time around Delight's transformation. This is set in the "Dawn Days", a hazy period set before Earth's recorded history. From the description of the changes in Delirium's realm ("the blossoms had already begun to fall in her domain") it's possible that this shows a time shortly after her transformation had begun.

Why Delight became Delirium has never been revealed. Delirium, herself, knows the reason...but she may be the only one. In Brief Lives, she tells Destiny, "There are things not in your book. There are paths outside this garden." Destiny does not or cannot answer when Delirium asks if he know why she stopped being Delight. In an interview for Musing magazine, Jill Thompson says that Neil Gaiman knows the reason for the change, but he's not telling...yet.

Another clue may be within one of Delirium's comments, "Well...you know...I nearly got married. But that was a long time ago. It never happened." Who she was going to marry and why the marriage never happened have never explained. [The Sandman F.A.Q.] Perhaps this is another connection to Delirium's transformation, but once again, Neil is the only one who really knows.
