Physical: force that holds the atoms together; practical applications; consolidation.
The element of Earth represents substance and physical form. Earth does not move;
it stays in one place. Earth is practical, substantial and material, and is concerned with
matter and the need to deal with it. Earth is passive and receptive: it must be acted on
and formed by external energies. Earth is the most stable of the elements. Earth elementals
are concerned with the physical, the material and with issues of worth and value.
In many ways, Little Earthquakes seems to embody the element of Earth, and not just because
of the album's name. Tori's own comments about this album communicates that the album was her
"diary form of things that have happened in my whole life, finding my own voice", which matches
up with the earth elemental's "issues of worth and value". Also, the artwork for the album
contains images which are of a more earthy nature, such as the phallic-shaped mushrooms on the
back page of the booklet. Honey and wood are reaped from the earth. Tori also admits that
"Little Earthquakes was really about looking at things I had to look at, my first door
opening up to things I'd closed off since I was a little kid. I'd numbed parts of myself so
they wouldn't get hurt", again pointing back about self-worth and dealing with what life has dealt her.
Tori's seventh solo album, Scarlet's Walk, is "...a story that's also a journey, that begins in LA and crosses the country, slowly heading east. America's in there, and specific places and things, Native American history and pornography and a girl on a plane who'll never get to New York, and Oliver Stone and Andrew Jackson and madness and a lot more. Not to mention a girl called Scarlet who may be the land and may be a person and may be a trail of blood." (Neil Gaiman)
The title song, Scarlet's Walk, speaks about "leaving terra". "Terra" being the Latin word for "land." "The stretching out of the word terra--signifying both Scarlett O'Hara's ruined estate and all that blood-soaked, hallowed earth--into a little earthquake." There also referencing the earlier album which had an Earth affinity. In the song, Scarlet's Walk, Tori traces the footsteps of the early European settlers along the east coast and passes through the capital of the Cherokee nation. "At the end, though, it's us as individuals with our love for the land."
