Vince Clarke finally realized his seemingly lifelong ambition of becoming ABBA with this release. He actually outdoes Erasure's own Abba-Esque. Taking a break from Erasure, Clarke joined forces with Phil Creswick and Jason Creasy and came up with this retro-sounding CD. The music is steeped in '70s disco and '80s Eurobeat, and it is thoroughly enjoyable. This is a fun album. Nothing deep, just strong melodies (for which Clarke is famous) and excellent, warm production. Clarke is one of the few artists who does bring the warmth out of a synth. Also, for good measure, cameos are found sprinkled throughout, but one has to have a sharp ear to hear Cindy Wilson (the B-52's) and Tori Amos's one-line contribution in the song Doin' This Thing. This just adds to the fun. Also, the sleeve design and sleeve notes are hilarious! Dance, retro, and Clarke fans will love this CD. Plus, where else can one find Vince Clarke rapping (on the wonderful track "Doin' This Thing")? ~ Aaron Bagdley, All Music Guide. [from artist direct]
