CINDY PALMANO

BIO >>
Cindy Palmano's uses a minimalist, stark presentation in both her photography and video direction. In Tori's videos, Cindy contributes her own unique vision, capturing the viewer's attention without overpowering the music itself. She is credited for the cover photos, photography and art direction in several of Tori Amos' works.

Cindy's photographs of Tori Amos are featured in the Little Earthquakes, Under The Pink and Boys For Pele album artwork and tourbooks, and various singles. She also directed the videos Crucify, Silent All These Years, Winter, China, and Pretty Good Year. The Bee Sides songbook lists Cindy Palmano as the photographer for the front and back covers. [RMTA]. The Silent All These Years video was nominated for an MTV award for "Best Video". It has been reported that Cindy decided to take time off from being an artist, to focus on raising a family - which is why she has not been involved with any of Tori's projects since Boys For Pele. QUOTES >>

"I'm not a victim to marketing. Don't kid yourself: there's no picture that goes out that I can't live with.... I work with Cindy Palmano, who's an amazing photographer; I want to portray certain things visually, and I do."
--Tori Amos, Keyboard Review, April 1996

"Cindy Palmano, the photographer, turned me on to her [Karen Binns]. She said this person has access to the underworld of fashion."
--Tori Amos, Shuz Magazine Vol.3 No.1, Spring 2000

"So Cindy called me up and said I know what he's building you. I said, Cin, who's building me what? Your lover in the video she said. As I remember, we started to dive into the idea that creative couples make "things" that can rip each other and their images of themselves - separate and together. separate and together. Which makes them separate together, build walls separately, Build walls together. Egos are delicate things. Unfortunately walls are not. Misperceptions running - fast so fast - it helps set the stones in place. China was shot in North Cornwall strangely enough were we recorded Choirgirl 5 1/2 years later. as in Spark, you are seeing real water in winter's glory in England. My "love" in the video built me two things which the sea took with her -- and honest to god rock piano and an upside down china teacup in the form of a skirt."
--Tori Amos, description of "China" video, Tori Stories Promo Booklet for The Complete Videos 1991-1998.

RDT: How did you work with Tori to get a feel for the music and message?

CP: We worked incredibly closely, in close contact. I'd take her through scene by scene, exactly how I imagined it going. We'd rehearse it. When we'd rehearse it, we were just really intimate. We knew what we were going to do before we did it. I think that's a pretty good way to work, actually. It's a good way to go, to know what you're going to shoot first and then it allows you the freedom to move from that.
